Didn't See That Coming

So Kole's school sends home progress reports and boy were we blind sided. He isn't up to par on any of the skills listed. Now I believe the teacher said at our meeting that this was not to alarm us- that the goal is see improvement on the progress reports as the year goes on but I think this is crazy. Why would you send out something like that? I feel awful. I had no idea he was so far "behind". I had heard of some of the other kids his age doing exceptionally well in one area or another but I had always felt that there wasn't a need to push. Now I'm pushing.

I'm not pushing like crazy- mostly I'm making time EVERYDAY (at least 30 minutes) to focus on learning (and in turn, focus on Kole). I suppose I should have started this earlier but better late than never. Now we're having a blast, the one on one time is great and extremely rewarding. I think I'm seeing some improvement too so hopefully that improvement will continue.

I also ordered a Leap Frog video that I've heard is GREAT for learning. Can't wait for it to get here. I didn't want to push too hard too early but this progress report has been the nudge I needed to get going. I know we'll get on track, we are already, but there just seems to be alot of pressure already.

Comments:
I agree with SOS, Kole it a very smart kid, who totally does everything on his own time. He will be just fine and before you know it he will be one of the smarter kids in his class.

I agree also that Kole is a very smart kid but I do think that pushing a little harder is not a bad thing. that is what life is all about, the challenge. if you don't get on the right track now, it will be harder to do later when they get older and more stubborn. and the workload is going to get harder as they go into each new grade. school now is harder than when we were kids. now is the time to instill good study habits and learn new challenging things when their minds are young and like sponges. you can do it. we have faith in you.
